Preveza Workshop 23-25 April 2010 –Report of activities

FRIDAY 23d    of April
·        Official opening of the workshop-Welcome speeches by the             
Vice Prefect of Preveza, Mrs Maria Zerva and Mrs Vasiliki Sfondili, the   head of Secondary Education of Preveza.  
·        Human rights -General presentation -European Institutions protecting    Human Rights.  (Barbara Zadraveli).
Here there was an analytical presentation of the History of the term “Human rights ” and how it evolved through the centuries, as humanity progressed and people started demanding what they deserved according to their social and economic conditions .The analysis reached  modern times and tackled with problems and violations of rights in   modern societies  with a parallel presentation of the European and international institutions and their specific tasks and responsibilities   which  are there  to protect the  rights on a universal basis .
·        Presentation of Symbolic Place of PerugiaItaly (Pr. Dino Nardelli ).
Here Colfiorito was presented to the Greek audience the camp which                                                                                                                                                                   hosted Montenegrin prisoners captured during some systematic occupation in 1943. Around 1.500 Montenegrins were confined in the barracks of Colfiorito, placed alongside numerous wood huts deliberately built there being the pre-existing buildings not able to host all of them. The symbolic place of Perugia was analysed and the reasons why it was chosen as a symbol were exemplified.

Otpor (Resistance) was analysed   as a student movement in October 1998 by a group of Belgrade University students dissatisfied with the work of existing academic organizations and the failure of protests against Serbia’s repressive University Law.A vivid presentation with relevant photos of the symbol followed and the audience was well in informed of the connection of the symbol and parallel violation of rights.

Kriopigi is a village in the Prefecture of Preveza, where during the Second World War a great number of its inhabitants but also of people in the greater area around took active part in resistance forces –Guerillas –against the Italians and the Germans, against fascism. On the 14th of April 1943 the Germans decided to take 28 peaceful farmers, young men as hostages with them, no matter if they were totally innocent and they had nothing to do with armed resistance .A month later the 23 of them along with other Greek people living in the Greater Area were executed in cold blood without any other serious reason but the thirst of The Germans for Revenge. After the historical background was analysed, connection with violations of rights was discussed.
The participants were given files with all the necessary documents: Narration of the incident as provided by documents –Original photos and data –Poem by renowned Greek Poet inspired by the event –Copy of the articles of the Universal declaration of Human rights.
OBJECTIVES:
Ø      Providing the participants with all necessary theoretical background knowledge on human rights 
Ø      Familiarization with the main symbolic places presented
Ø      Study of authentic material so as to use them on later activities


 SATURDAY 24th   of April
·        Visiting Kriopigi, a village about 25 kilometres away from the capital chosen as the symbolic place of the project.
·        Visiting the marble memorial in the centre of the village with the names of the people executed on it.
·        Talking to eye witnesses of the incident and recording interviews with them so as to be used as authentic material later.
·        Visiting a small museum where photos and documents of the time are kept.
·        Laboratory on site was transferred to a nearby school where the participant pupils under the guidance and coordination of the experts were involved in activities and interactive games exploiting all documentation and authentic material given.
·        Coordination of activities was put into effect in groups where, using their imagination and creativity they had to produce different tasks each group.
Group 1: Studying relevant poem from bibliography given they had to select key words and rewrite-create their own poem.
Group 2: Based on testimonies and interviews from eye-witnesses they had to produce paintings and sketches inspired by them.
Group 3-4: Based on narrations and documents they had to dramatise scenes relevant to the event, create characters and act them out.
All groups: They had to write out questions based on the symbolic place connecting it to the general theoretical framework of human rights and relevant articles and how they were violated.
OBJECTIVES:
Ø      Familiarization with the symbolic place-Laboratory on site.
Ø      Immediate involvement of pupils with taking interviews, recording them, exploiting documents and use them creatively.
Ø      Development of artistic skills exploiting data and documents leading into improving   improvisation techniques ,writing skills and artistic creation inspired by the theme of human rights and possible violations .
Ø      Writing questions to be used for the game.


 SUNDAY 25th of April
·        Universal Declaration of Human Rights –European Convention on Human rights -Video presentation with pictures and animation.(Plenary session )
·        Discussion and analysis of the articles presented –Clarifications –Feedback (Plenary session )
·        Connecting the articles to the symbolic places –Finding out similarities ,differences .(Group work )
·        Spotting specific violations of rights  in all three cases-Kriopigi, Colfiorito, Otpor-.(Group work )
·        Gathering and evaluating evidence –Compare and contrast activity –sharing ideas and conclusions .(Plenary session )
·        Planning future activities .
OBJECTIVES
Ø      Further familiarization with the content of the Universal Declaration and the European Convention of human rights.
Ø      Enhancing pupils’ cooperation techniques and team skills.
Ø      Making pupils more sensitive and well aware in human rights issues.
Ø      Connecting articles to their everyday life and make them active citizens
Ø       Developing historic memory and connect it to our contemporary world.
